Columbus, OH-The Cleveland State fencing programs opened the 2025-26 regular season competing at the OSU Open hosted by Ohio State University. Fencers from the men's and women's teams competed in all three weapons starting with pool play rounds and concluding with an elimination bracket.
On the women's side,
Rayllen Prafil Capaccio placed eighth in the epee bracket. Prafil Capaccio won her first two matches as the no. 11 seed before falling in the round of eight to no. 3 seed Julia Semkin. Freshman
Anna Klimenko was the no. 16 seed and won her first bout before falling to top seed Gloria Klughardt in the round of 16.
Anna Quinn placed 18
th and
Evelyn Malvestuto finished 29
th in women's foil. Both Quinn and Malvestuto fell in the round of 32.
Aubrey Testroet placed 14
th in women's saber, winning her first bout in the elimination bracket before falling in the round of 16.
On the men's side
Nolan Giovagnoli placed 15
th and
Trent Chemezov placed 17
th in men's epee. Giovagnoli won his first two bouts in the elimination bracket before falling in the round of eight. Chemezov received a bye in the first round and claimed his second round match to also advance to the round of eight.
MJ Qashou (34
th),
Adrian Rakotozafy (36
th) and
Ben Palladino (38
th) also competed in the epee draw for the Vikings.
Jamison Horne finished 16
th and
Simon Caisse placed 17
th in men's saber. The two went head-to-head in the round of 32 with Horne prevailing to advance to the round of 16, where he fell to fourth seeded Kelly Liu.
Conner Bailey also competed in the saber bracket placing 33
rd.
Marcus Strugar posted a 17
th place finish in men's foil. Strugar won his first bout before falling in the round of 32.
Sal Sorrentino placed 28
th and
Matthew Seljan placed 44
th.
The Vikings continue their season-opening weekend in Columbus with the OSU Duals scheduled to take place on Sunday.
