CLEVELAND, Ohio – Mark Lang has been named an Assistant Coach of the Cleveland State men's and women's swimming teams, as announced by head coach
Trent Richardson.
"We are so excited to have Mark joining our staff," said Richardson. "Mark's passion for teaching, leadership, team culture, science, and data is going to be a strong asset for our program. We are beginning a new and exciting chapter here at CSU and Mark is a perfect fit for the direction our program is heading."
Lang arrives after spending last season as an assistant coach at Trinity University, helping the men's and women's teams to SCAC Championships. In his lone season, he aided in eight NCAA All-Americans, 15 SCAC Champions, one SCAC Swimmer of the Year on the women's side, which was also an NCAA National Champion.
"I am incredibly honored to have the opportunity to join Cleveland State," said Lang. "I am thankful to Trent and the Athletics Leadership for their faith in me to help contribute to a program with such excellent tradition and history. I am enthusiastic about the future of CSU Swimming and Diving under Trent's leadership; from the beginning of my interview process, it was clear to me that he has a clear vision of what the program has been, is, and can be, and I greatly appreciate the opportunity that I have been given to help turn that into a reality. Go Vikes!"
Lang previously spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at Kenyon College, helping with 15 NCAA Champions. The men's and women's teams had top-five national finishes each year, winning the 2022 NCAA National Championship on the women's side and a runner-up finish on the men's in 2023. At the conference level, the women won the NCAC Championship in 2022 and the men in 2023.
Lang was the head coach of the Manistee Swim team for two years and the interim head coach at Manistee High School for a year. He also served two seasons as an assistant coach at SERF Swim Club in Gambier, Ohio.
Lang received degrees in neuroscience and biology from Kenyon, where he was also a member of the swim team. Lang qualified for the NCAA III Championships each of his two seasons at Kenyon and was an All-American in 2020.
