Cleveland State Lacrosse Caps off Regular Season With 14-12 Victory Over Detroit

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings wrapped up the regular season with a 14-12 victory against Detroit on Saturday afternoon inside the Krenzler Bubble. Cleveland State concludes the 2023 season with a 6-7 overall record, the most wins in a single season under head coach Andy German to go along with a 4-5 mark in ASUN contests.

Cleveland State wasted no time getting on the board as Amiri Austin netted an unassisted goal just 41 seconds into the contest. Two minutes later, Gavin Held extended the lead off a pass from Alex Van Voorhis.

The Titans broke through for their first goal at the 9:51 mark to trail 2-1. Connor Zwagerman got the goal back with an unassisted tally with 5:28 to go in the quarter. Two minutes later, Michael Care notched a man-up goal off a Gannon Matthews pass to lead 4-1.

Matthews pushed the margin to 5-1 with an unassisted goal before Detroit scored with 45 seconds left as the Green and White led 5-2 heading into the second quarter.

Detroit collected the first two goals of the quarter to close within 5-4 with 12:48 remaining in the first half. Cleveland State closed the half with three unanswered goals by three different players to lead 8-4 at halftime. Matthews, Andrew Boniface, and Ryan Haigh were the goal scorers.

The Titans netted their lone goal of the third quarter with 11:19 left to trail 8-5. One minute later, Van Voorhis found the back of the net off an Austin pass to make it 9-5.

A pair of man-up goals by Held were sandwiched between a Brendan Sigurdson goal as the Green and White led 12-5 with one quarter left in regulation.

For the third straight quarter, the visitors netted the first goal as the margin stood at six with 13:27 remaining. An unassisted goal by Gareth Haigh was followed by a Held goal as the Vikings advantage grew to 14-6 with 9:46 to play.

Detroit accounted for the game's final six goals, but it wasn't enough as Cleveland State won the finale, 14-12.

Held led the way with five points on four goals and an assist. This was also his third hat-trick of the season. Matthews finished with four points on two goals and two assists.

Charlie Williams picked up eight ground balls and won eight faceoffs on the afternoon. Cameron Logan finished with 13 saves.
