Cleveland State Swimming & Diving to Host Water Safety Event

The Cleveland State University swimming team has partnered with Alpha Lambda Sigma Alumnae Chapter, Theta Rho Chapter, Rhythm & Stroke LLC to host Swim 1922, a free water safety event.

The event will talk place in the Busbey Natatorium on Saturday, April 29 from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Swim 1922 was created to address the unfortunate truth that according to the CDC, approximately 10 people drown every day in the U.S.A. An even more startling fact is that 70 percent of African American children and 60 percent of Hispanic children in the U.S. do not know how to swim. Additionally, African American children are three times more likely to drown than Caucasian children.

The water safety clinic will spotlight young women of color who will discuss the importance of learning to swim and water safety. Coach Andre Morton will conduct swimming lessons for attendees ages 7 and up. Refreshments and gifts are available for each participant. At the conclusion of the event there will be a chance to win free swim lessons (5 sessions).

 Program Benefits:

  • Provides opportunities for youth and adults within the African American community to learn water.
  • safety in general and swimming specifically.
  • Reduces the level of fear and apprehension of learning to swim.
  • Opens minds and changes attitudes regarding African American's and swimming.
