Box Score Columbus, OH-The Cleveland State Lacrosse team opened the season with a tough loss to no. 11 Ohio State on Saturday, 19-12 in Columbus.
Gannon Matthews and Brendan Sigurdson had three goals each for the Vikings, all of which came in the second half. Cameron Logan played the majority of the game in goal and tallied six saves.
Ohio State scored five goals each in the first and second quarters to carry a 10-2 lead into the halftime break.
The Buckeyes carried that momentum into the third quarter, as OSU started with four straight goals to make it 14-2. The Vikings continued to play and finished the third quarter strong. Three straight goals from Sigurdson, Matthews and Ian McKissick made it 16-6 Ohio State at the end of the third quarter.
Cleveland State outscored Ohio State in the fourth quarter 6-3. McKissick, Matthews, Michael Care and Ryan Haigh all scored in the final quarter, and Sigurdson added two goals. The Vikings outshot the Buckeyes 8-7 in the final frame.
Cleveland State finished even with OSU on faceoffs at 17 apiece, but the Vikings committed 18 turnovers and surrendered 41 ground balls to Ohio State in the game.
Cleveland State next travels to Notre Dame for a road matchup in South Bend, Indiana on Sunday, February 19th at noon.
