Cleveland State Lacrosse Gets off to Fast Start but Falls to Utah, 15-11

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings fell to Utah 15-11 in the program's first-ever ASUN home game on Saturday afternoon inside the Krenzler Bubble. The setback puts the Green and White at 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the ASUN. 

Prior to the game, Cleveland State recognized honorary captain, Maxwell Williams, brother of junior, Cleveland State player, Charlie Williams. Max was involved in a tragic incident resulting in paralyzation.

Cleveland State couldn't have asked for a better start than today's, scoring the first three goals and forcing Utah into a timeout with 11:12 remaining in the opening quarter. Ryan Haigh opened the scoring off a pass from Derek Radke at the 13:07 mark before Radke and Reggie Regala tallied unassisted goals.

The Utes got on the board for the first time with 10:28 to play in the first, but the Vikings answered with three straight goals to lead 6-1 with 3:15 showing on the scoreboard. Nick Polydoras started the run with an unassisted tally and Adam Clark capped the run on an assist from Amiri Austin. Utah bagged the final goal of the quarter to trail the Green and White 6-2.

Gannon Matthews netted an unassisted goal to start the second quarter as the scoreboard read 7-2 with 13:51 to play in the first half. However, Utah accounted for the final three goals of the half to get within 7-5 at the intermission.

Utah snagged the first two goals of the third, tying the game at 7-7 with 12:22 remaining in the quarter. A man-up goal by R. Haigh off a feed from Matthews put the Vikings back on top, 8-7 with 10:08 to go. Just 19 seconds later, Utah knotted the game for a second a time.

Adam Clark then found the back of the net off a pass from Jason Sullivan, giving Cleveland State their final lead of the game, 9-8 with 8:27 to go in the period. Utah ended the quarter with four unanswered goals to lead 12-9.

The run continued into the fourth as the visitors tacked on three more goals to lead 15-9 with 6:39 left in regulation. Two late goals by Gavin Held and Sullivan made it 15-11 in favor of Utah.

Inside the Box Score
The final scoreline was the same as the ASUN season opener against Bellarmine.

Cameron Logan finished with a program-record 21 saves.

R. Haigh and Clark each finished with two goals, while Matthews had two assists.

Evan Moskwa went 8-of-17 in the faceoff circle, finishing with four ground balls. Nick Polydoras had two of the four caused turnovers.
