Cleveland State Lacrosse Stumbles at No. 17 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Cleveland State started their three-game road trip with a 13-5 setback against No. 17 Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings defense held the top offense in the NCAA scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Cleveland State hadn't scored first or trailed in the opening quarter until Michigan scored back-to-back goals in the opening two minutes. The Wolverines extended their lead to 3-0 before Gannon Matthews got the Vikings on the board with an unassisted goal at the 3:51 mark.

Michigan got the goal back less than a minute later, converting on the man-up to lead 4-1. Ryan Haigh trimmed the margin in half with an unassisted goal with 1:50 showing, but UM scored with just one second remaining in the quarter to lead 5-2.

The Wolverines bagged two goals in the final five minutes of the second quarter to lead 7-2 at halftime.

Michigan accounted for all six goals of the third quarter, extending their advantage to 13-2.

Gavin Held scored back-to-back goals in a 30-second span, trimming the Vikings deficit to 13-4 with 7:24 left in the contest. Robbie Brazanskas assisted on the first goal and Andrew Boniface had the helper on the second.

Matthews tallied his second goal of the afternoon and final of the contest as the Green and White fell on the road, 13-5.

Matthews has scored multiple goals in all three games this season, raising his team-best total to seven. With his two goals this afternoon, Held is now second on the team with four.

Cameron Logan made 17 saves, tying for third-most in a single game in program history.

Evan Moskwa led the Green and White with three ground balls and five faceoff wins.

The Vikings were 23-of-27 on clears while forcing the Wolverines into five failed clears.

The Vikings will look for their first win of the season when they head to Canisius on Sunday, March 6 for a noon faceoff.
