Cleveland State Wrestling Sweeps MAC Tri-Match at Home

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State swept their MAC tri-match on Saturday afternoon inside Woodling Gymnasium. The Vikings defeated Rider 22-15 and Edinboro 25-10. With the results, Cleveland State improves to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the MAC.

Match 1: Cleveland State (22) vs. Rider (15)
The Vikings grabbed the opening points of the match with an 8-3 decision by Logan Heil at 125-pounds to lead 3-0.

Rider jumped ahead 10-3 with a 14-2 major decision at 133-pounds and forfeit at 141-pounds.

No. 30/32 Marcus Robinson received a forfeit at 149-pounds as the Vikings closed to within one, 10-9. Daniel Patten pulled out an overtime victory at 157-pounds as Cleveland State went back on top, 12-10.

The Green and White extended their advantage to 15-10 after No. 31/33 Riley Smucker won 7-4 at 165-pounds. Rider pulled to within two, 15-13, following a 7-4 decision at 174-pounds.

No. 31/UR DeAndre Nassar pulled out a 4-1 decision at 184-pounds as Cleveland State led 18-13. At the conclusion of the match, Rider was deducted a team point as the lead was now, 18-12.

Ben Smith put the match out of reach with a 15-4 major decision at 197-pounds as the scoreboard read, 22-12.

The final match of the dual went to Rider with an 8-2 decision at 285-pounds, but Cleveland State won, 22-15.

Match 2: Cleveland State (25), Edinboro (10)
Cleveland State raced out to a 4-0 lead after Heil shutout his opponent at 125-pounds, 10-0. Manley then bumped the margin to 7-0 with a 5-1 decision at 133-pounds.

Edinboro got on the board with a forfeit at 141-pounds to trail 7-6. The Vikings got three points back after No. 30/32 Marcus Robinson won 11-7 at 141-pounds, making it 10-6 in favor of the home team.

Patten notched his second overtime victory of the afternoon, winning 3-1 at 157-pounds as Cleveland State led 13-6. No. 31/33 Smucker pushed the lead to 16-6 behind a 9-2 decision at 165-pounds.

Anthony Rice hung on for a thrilling 5-3 victory at 174-pounds as the Green and White now led 19-6. The visitors trimmed their deficit to 19-10 with a 10-2 major decision at 184-pounds. However, Smith won with five seconds of riding time after three overtimes at 197-pounds as the Vikings pushed their advantage to 22-10.

Daniel Bucknavich capped off the Cleveland State victory with a 3-2 decision at 285-pounds as the Vikings won the match, 25-10.
