GAME RECAP

CLEVELAND -- Tre Gomillion scored 15 second-half points and Cleveland State rallied from a 16-point deficit, but the Vikings eventually dropped a 73-65 decision to one-loss DePaul on Wednesday in the Wolstein Center.

The Vikings trailed by 16 points twice in the first half, but stormed back in the second half behind a strong defensive effort and timely shooting.

Cleveland State, which dropped to 4-8 on the season, trailed 43-31 with 14:57 to play in the game before rallying to tie the game.

The Vikings used a 14-2 run to tie the game at 45-45 at the 10:24 mark of the second period. Five different Vikings scored during the run and Franklyn Penn Jr. knotted the game for the first time when he drilled a three-pointer.

DePaul, which improved to 11-1 on the season, stretched the lead to 59-51 with 6:00 to play in the game but Cleveland State would once again have an answer.

Algevon Eichelberger knocked down a free throw and Hugo Ferreira converted a layup to bring the Vikings to within 59-54 at the 4:18 mark of the second half.

A three-point play by Torrey Patton trimmed the lead to 59-57 before Jaylen Butz hit a free throw for the Blue Demons to up the lead to 60-57. Gomillion answered with a layup to bring Cleveland State to within 60-59 with 3:36 to play, but that would be as close as the Vikings would get.

Cleveland State returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 21) when it travels to East Tennessee State for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
