LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Cleveland State University wrestling team continued its road trip Friday afternoon by dropping a 33-5 decision at Rider in Eastern Wrestling League action inside Alumni Gymnasium.
The Vikings had chances in multiple bouts to flip the script as seven of Rider's nine victories came via decision.
Junior Chris Morrow notched the lone win for CSU Friday, coming at 184 pounds.
Rider won each of the first five bouts via decision, but the Vikings took leads into the third period in two of those matches.
Redshirt sophomore Cameron Lathem had rallied from a two-point deficit to take a two-point lead early in the final frame at 125 pounds. However, his opponent used two takedowns in the final period to claim a three-point win.
Redshirt Freshman Brady Barnett notched a takedown and two near-fall points in the closing stages of the second period at 149 pounds, breaking a 2-2 tie. However, his Rider foe secured points in the final 30 seconds to turn the tide and claim the win.
Redshirt sophomore Nico O'Dor lost a tightly contested bout at 157 pounds, losing a 3-2 decision.
True freshman Ben Smith tied his bout at 197 pounds with a third-period takedown, but his comeback attempt ran out of steam as his opponent won by two points.
Cleveland State has a pair of EWL duals next weekend, beginning Friday Jan. 18, at Edinboro.
