CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team defeated John Carroll 40-6 on Sunday to improve to 1-0 on the year in dual meets.

The Vikings dominated their cross-town foe, earning a pin, tech fall and two separate major decision's in the win. In the 45th all-time meeting between the two, the win improves the Vikings to 39-4-2 in the series. CSU won 39-9 last season.

Evan Cheek (125), Mike Kostandaras (133) and Michael Carlone (141) all won the first three matches of the contest by forfeit as the Blue Streaks did not field any competition in those three weight classes.

In the first actual match of the day at 149, Nick Montgomery earned a convincing 15-3 maj. decision over John Carroll's John Connick.

At 157, Chas Busz grabbed the toughest victory of the day, a 10-9 decision over Blake Dixon. The match finished at 9-9 before Busz was awarded one point for riding time, giving him the win.

The next two matches went to JCU, though the Vikings battled heavily in each one. At 165, the Blue Streaks' Tyler Hardtke earned a 6-4 decision over CSU's John Vaughn. Gabe Stark (174) fell 9-5 to Tom McNulty.

In the final three weight classes, the Vikings were able to flash their strength. Wrestling two classes above his usual competition, Nathan Wynkoop took home the 184 win for the day in a 21-6 tech. fall over Gabe Susinski.

That match was followed by a 197 pin for Sam Wheeler, the Vikings first pin of the year. Wheeler pinned Russ Porter in just 2:51.

In the heavyweight bout, Riley Shaw stayed unbeaten on the year (6-0), earning an 11-2 maj. decision victory over JCU's Will Porter.

The Vikings will be at the Ohio Duals at Geneva's Spire Institute on Saturday (Nov. 14) beginning at 10:00 a.m.
