Vikings Compete at Case Western Duals

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State fencing teams had a strong showing at the Case Western Reserve Dual meet on Saturday.

The men's team was undefeated, going 6-0, while the women were 5-1 with a close tough loss versys Purdue. The men are now 11-1 for the season and the women are 9-3.

The men's team was led by the foil squad which was 47-7 for the day. The squad was led by senior Phelan Spence who was 17-0 for the day. Spence is now 35-0 for the season, posting his strongest season start so far.

Matthew Gebbett also had a very strong day, going 18-0 for the day and is now 32-1 for the season.

Leading the men's epee squad was junior, and 2014 NCAA Championships participant; Paul Duchow who went 15-3 for the day and is now 32-4 for the season.

Also having a great showing was Jason Woods from the saber squad. Woods picked up his first wins of the season this weekend, going 5-13 for the day. Logan Eskew on the men's epee squad also had a great day with an 11-7 finish for the day.

The women's team was led by the foil squad which was 51-3 for the day.

Women's foil was led by freshman Sarah Mok who dominated the field for the day. Mok was 14-0 and received seven points against her out of a possible 70. Finishing out of the women's foil squad was Samantha Finster who was 13-1 on the day and Morgan Ashcraft who was 12-2. Ashcraft also picked up her first wins of the season.

The women's saber squad was led by senior Christine Bocci. Bocci was 12-3 on the day.

"We had a very good day at Case this weekend," head coach Andy Tulleners said. "Many of our newer fencers showed great improvements from OSU to this weekend. This was key to our strong performance on the day. It was also great to have the support we did at the event from parents, athletic staff and alumni who came out to cheer us on."

CSU is back in action on January 17th at West Point.
