EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened play at the Spartan Invitational Friday, picking up two doubles wins and six singles victories.
"I thought today was a good day, everyone had good attitudes and put forth a good effort on the courts," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "The things that bumped it up from an average day to a good day were; going 2-1 in doubles play and Ellen going 2-0 in singles play. The doubles teams that picked up the wins had never played together before, so that was awesome to see and Ellen really controlled both of her matches to earn the victories. We have some things to work on in singles and doubles, but we will move on to day two and try to improve on our performance from today."
Ellen Folkers, who is playing in the C Singles Flight, posted a 2-0 record on the day, earning victories over a pair of Michigan State opponents. Folkers first earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Anna Zelechonok and then notched a 6-2, 6-2 win over Christina Brown.
The other four Vikings competing at the Spartan Invitational split their singles matches Friday, including Kara Sherwood and Princess Gbadamosi who were playing in the A Singles Flight. Sherwood opened the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over IPFW's Ella Norgren before falling to Lauren Chypyha from Wisconsin (6-0, 6-2). After dropping her first match of the day, Gbadamosi rebounded with a 7-6 (1), 6-3 victory over Horizon League opponent Mariana Palacios from UIC.
Mathilde Orange and Victoria Bensimon competed in the B Singles Flight, Orange posting a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Toledo's Mackenzie Bowman and Bensimon earning a 6-3, 6-4 win over Toledo's Lexy Pitt.
Cleveland State went 2-1 in doubles play on the first day of the Spartan Invitational, picking up wins in the B and C Doubles Flights. Orange and Sherwood posted an 8-2 victory over a Toledo duo in the B flight, while Alex Bush and Folkers notched an 8-5 victory over a tandem from Michigan State in the C flight.
The Vikings will continue play at the Spartan Invitational tomorrow (Saturday) at 9:30 a.m., with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
