DAY ONE RESULTS

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team had a solid showing on the first day of the Cornell Fall Invitational Friday, posting six singles victories and one doubles win. The Vikings will continue play at the Cornell Fall Invite Saturday morning.

"I thought we had a solid day of the tennis today, and I thought we had a pretty decent showing for our first time out this fall," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We were able to pick up a couple tiebreak victories, which really shows the mental toughness of our players and hopefully we can continue this throughout the weekend. We had some really strong singles play today which will hopefully give us some momentum throughout the weekend."

In singles play, the Vikings had three representatives in the A Flight, with all three picking up victories Friday evening. Freshman Lauren Golick picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Rocio Lopez of Albany, while Kara Sherwood (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8)) and Princess Gbadamosi (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8)) each picked up tiebreak victories over opponents from Binghamton.

Freshman Victoria Bensimon picked up another tiebreak singles victory for the Vikings in the B Flight, posting a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (7) victory over Cat Crummey of Albany.

Ellen Folkers and Alex Bush represented CSU in the C singles flight, Folkers earning a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Mireille Hermans of Albany, and Bush posting a 6-2, 6-2 win over Marta Briega of Akron.

All six Vikings who posted singles wins Friday, advance to the quarterfinals of their respective flights, and will continue play after doubles action tomorrow.

Golick and Sherwood teamed up for the lone doubles victory on the day, earning an 8-4 win against a duo from Albany in the A doubles flight. Golick/Sherwood and Bush/Gbadamosi (who received a bye Friday evening) advance to the quarterfinals of the A draw, and will continue play first thing tomorrow morning.

Action at the Cornell Fall Invite will begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning with two rounds of doubles, followed by two rounds of singles.
