CLEVELAND, Ohio - Four different Cleveland State men's fencers placed in the top 12 at the NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted Sunday (March 11) in CSU's Woodling Gymnasium. The event featured student-athletes from Cleveland State, Detroit, Lawrence, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wayne State.
Tom Bienvenu placed 10th in the sabre group, one spot ahead of teammate Wesley Miller. Levi Young (epee) and Phelan Spence (foil) each took 12th in their respective weapons.
Bryan Twitchell and Mike McDonald took 14th and 17th, respectively, in the sabre competition. John Cuturic was 16th in the foil group.
"I was proud of all of our guys, but I thought Tom Bienvenu stood out," head coach Andy Tulleners said. "He probably had the best day of his career. He's been working with the coaching staff and did a nice job implementing the strategies that were in place."
Bienvenu was 8-8 to improve his record to 64-33, aided on Sunday by 49 touches. Miller was 6-10 with 51 touches while Twitchell finished with three wins.
"I thought it was great for us as a program to have our entire sabre squad qualify," Tulleners said. "That was a good group and they all got better as the year went along by practicing against each other."
Young was 7-10 to finish the season with a 79-40 mark. Spence was 6-10 to give him a team-best 81 victories this season and Cuturic won a bout to finish his year 43-72.
"Overall, it was a really good weekend," Tulleners said. "I was pleased with the layout and the venue that Woodling Gymnasium provided and it was a well-run event with national and international level referees. I think it was an important weekend for our program."
