CSU-Michigan State Results
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Maria Lazaris and Nicole Janek each won their respective singles match Saturday afternoon, as the Cleveland State women's tennis team fell to a tough Michigan State squad, 5-2.
"We had a couple strong wins today, but we need more consistency in our lineup if we are going to beat high-level teams like Michigan State," assistant coach Jay Tee said. "We definitely improved on some parts of our game from yesterday, and going forward we will have some things to work on before next weekend's matches."
Lazaris, who was playing at No. 1 singles, earned a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Michigan State's Nicole Herzog, to even the score at 1-1 after the Spartans claimed the doubles point. Michigan State was able to claim the next three singles matches though, as they got out to a 4-1 lead.
Janek earned her second victory in the past two matches then, as she claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Katrina Lingl at the No. 5 position. Janek's win put the score at 4-2, before the Spartans were able to win the final singles match for the 5-2 victory.
"Nicole was the Clarkston hammer once again today, as she nailed down another victory for us," Tee said. "She has certainly been our most consistent player this weekend and hopefully she can continue that throughout the season."
The Vikings will play at home for the first time this season next weekend, as they host Xavier at 5:00 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 10) and Akron at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 12). On Friday, the women will be playing simultaneously with the men's team, as they try to set a program attendance record at the Paramount Tennis Club in Westlake, Ohio.
