CSU-IPFW Results
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind four singles victories, the Cleveland State women's tennis team earned their first victory of the season Friday evening, as the Vikings defeated IPFW, 4-3.
"This was a hard fought match for us tonight and I thought everyone really stepped up their game and came out with an intensity that allowed us to come away victorious," assistant coach Jay Tee said. "Although we dropped the doubles point, they didn't dwell on that as they came out firing during singles play, capturing four wins. We had energy on the court tonight that we need to carry over to tomorrow as we try to get the weekend sweep at Michigan State."
After dropping the doubles point, the Vikings came back to win four of the six singles matches to earn the 4-3 victory. Catrine Bjerrehus, who was playing at the No. 2 singles position, earned CSU's first victory of the day claiming a 6-4, 6-1 win over IPFW's Raquel Vescovi. Kara Sherwood gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles, while Alex Power extended Cleveland State's lead to 3-1 following a victory at the No. 4 position (6-4, 6-2).
Nicole Janek posted the final, and clutch win on the night for CSU, as she topped IPFW's Frederique Sunstrum, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to seal the victory for the Vikings.
"Nicole was a Clarkston hammer for us tonight, as she nailed the match shut for us, getting our fourth point after dominating her singles match," Tee said. "Nicole, along with everyone else, played very tough tonight and you can definitely see the improvement from our first time on the court earlier this spring."
Cleveland State returns to action tomorrow afternoon (Feb. 4), as they travel to Michigan State for a 2:00 p.m. match.
