CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team posted two victories Sunday afternoon, earning a 4-3 victory over Toledo and a 7-0 win against Case Western Reserve. With the two wins, Cleveland State is now 5-3 on the season.
"Overall we had a good day today throughout both matches, including our first program win against Toledo," assistant coach Jay Tee said. "The Toledo match was our second win over a quality MAC team this weekend, and everyone improved from match to match. Both wins today were complete team efforts and we are getting contributions from different people every match which is great to see."
Cleveland State earned a 4-3 victory over Toledo in the first match of the day behind three singles wins and the doubles point.
In doubles action, Nicole Janek and Kara Sherwood earned an 8-6 win at the No. 2 position, while Mengdi Liu and Alex Power won by default at No. 3 doubles.
Cleveland State's singles wins against Toledo came from Maria Lazaris, Janek and Liu. Lazaris, who was playing at No. 2 singles, earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Pia Rygh, while Janek picked up a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Amanda Border at No. 5 singles. Liu's victory came at the No. 6 spot, as she won by default.
"Although the team was a little tired during the second match of the day, I thought they pushed through and really showed some effort on the court against Case," Tee said. "We definitely have things that we need to work on before next weekend, but overall I really liked what I saw on the courts today."
The Vikings had an easier match against Case, as they swept the Spartans, 7-0. CSU came out strong with three victories in doubles play, including the second win of the day for Janek and Sherwood at No. 2 doubles (8-7).
Bjerrehus, Janek and Liu highlighted CSU's singles victories against Case. Bjerrehus posted her first win at No. 1 singles on the season against Case, earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Janek, who earned her third victory of the weekend, claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, while Liu also cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles.
