CSU-Akron Results
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team concluded their first homestand of the season Sunday afternoon, as the Vikings fell to the Akron Zips, 7-0. CSU is now 2-3 on the season, while the Zips improve to 7-0.
"Our doubles teams showed a lot of improvement today, but they need to continue to improve if we want to reach our goals throughout the season," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We had a good chance to win at No. 2 doubles, and one of these days Alex Power and Alex Bush will have a breakthrough. I think we felt a pressure to do more than we were capable of today, and that is something that we can't do."
The No. 2 doubles team of Alex Bush and Alex Power gave the Akron duo of Angelika Jogasuria and Angelina Jogasuria all they could handle, as the Vikings came up just short in an 8-7 (4) match.
After collecting the doubles point, the Zips rattled off six straight singles victories, with the No. 4 singles match the only one not decided in two sets. Power played at the No. 4 position for Cleveland State, pushing Akron's Angelika Jogasuria to the limit. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Power came back to claim a 7-6 (5) victory during the second set to force a super tie breaker. Despite falling in the super tie breaker, Power was the highlight in singles play for the Vikings Sunday afternoon.
"Today, Alex competed hard, kept balls in play and found weaknesses in her opponent's game which allowed her to be successful on the court," Etzkin said. "She didn't give up after losing the first set and she played a smart game to push her opponent to the limit."
"We have big goals for next weekend, we play a pair of MAC opponents in Toledo and Ball State and also host Case Western. If we work hard this week and continue to improve our play I think we can come away with three victories next weekend," Etzkin said.
Cleveland State will return to action next weekend when the Vikings travel to Ball State and host Toledo and Case Western. CSU will first travel to Ball State for a 6:00 p.m. contest on Friday (Feb. 17) and will then host Toledo at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 19) and Case Western at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday.
