Day 1 Results
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened the 2011 fall season Friday, at the BGSU Invitational. Kara Sherwood and Alex Power both won their first two matches, advancing to the championship match in their respective flights.
"Kara and Alex really stood out today in their singles matches, and they have a chance to win their draws in the finals tomorrow," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "It felt like a good day today, we had a lot of wins and I was pleased at the end of the day. We only had a couple mental lapses, which we will work to improve on as we continue this weekend."
Sherwood earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory during her first round match in the Flight 5 Singles, while she won the second round match, 6-1, 6-4. Power posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory during her Flight 6 Singles first round match, along with a 6-1, 6-4 second round win.
"We were great in doubles today, we have a couple people coming back from injuries so we had some different combinations, but they worked out very well for us," Etzkin said. "We swept our doubles rounds and that was one of our goals for the day. Tomorrow we will have two more rounds of doubles, and we are looking to win at least four out of the six doubles matches."
The duo of Catrine Bjerrehus and Nicole Janek won their opening Flight 2 Doubles match, 8-0, while Power and Mengdi Liu also won their Flight 4 Doubles match, 8-0. Competing in the Flight 3 Doubles for CSU were Maria Lazaris and Kara Sherwood, who were victorious in their opening match, 8-5.
"Tomorrow we are going to go out and compete, and leave here proving to ourselves that we are one of, if not the best teams here," Etzkin said.
The Vikings will continue action at the BGSU Invitational on Saturday, September 17.
