Four Advance To Consolation Championships At Martha Thorn Invite

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - After the second day of the Martha Thorn Invitational, four Vikings advanced to the championship match of their respective consolation brackets following their play Saturday. Maria Lazaris and Alex Power advanced in singles action for Cleveland State while Nicole Janek and Kara Sherwood advanced in doubles play.

"It's great to see Maria, Alex, Nicole and Kara all reach the championship match of their brackets, they all played some great tennis today," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We have been improving every day that we are on the court this season and hopefully they come out strong tomorrow and bring home some wins."

Lazaris, who advanced to the championship match of the A Flight consolation bracket, earned a 6-0, 6-4 win over Megan O'Sullivan of Duquesne during play Saturday and will now play Sunday (Oct. 9) morning at 10:30 a.m.

Power defeated Daniella Oslo of Duquesne to advance to the semifinals Saturday morning, and then earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Minh Evans of Pittsburgh to advance to the championship match of the C Flight consolation bracket. Power is also set to begin play at 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

The CSU doubles team of Janek and Sherwood earned an 8-3 win over a duo from Youngstown State to advance to the championship match of the doubles B Flight consolation bracket, and will now play at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.

The Vikings will conclude play at the Martha Thorn Invitational Sunday (Oct. 9).
