Vikings Open Play At Martha Thorn Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team completed day one at the Martha Thorn Invitational Friday evening, with two doubles teams advancing to the semifinals of their respective flights. Three Vikings also advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective singles consolation flights, including Catrine Bjerrehus, Maria Lazaris and Nicole Janek.

"We had a strong start today which was good to see from this group," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We had two doubles teams advance in their brackets, while we also had some strong singles play from Catrine, Maria and Nicole. We need to continue the momentum going into the next two days of the invite."

In Flight A doubles action, Alexandra Bush and Alex Power defeated a duo from Ohio State, 8-6 to advance to the semifinals which will be played Saturday afternoon.

The duo of Bjerrehus and Lazaris also advanced to the semifinals of their doubles bracket, defeating a Duquesne team, 8-2 in the first round and a West Virginia team, 8-4 in the quarterfinals of the B Flight.

After losing their first matches of the day, the trio of Bjerrehus, Lazaris and Janek all rebounded with a win in the first round of the consolation bracket to reach the quarterfinals of their respective flights. Bjerrehus earned a 7-6, 6-3 win over Marta Burak of Youngstown State in the A consolation flight, while Lazaris earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kelsey Becker of Ohio State also in the A consolation flight. Janek's win came in the B consolation flight, defeating Youngstown State's Gimena Puppo, 6-3, 7-6.

Singles action will continue on Saturday (Oct. 8) at 9:00 a.m. for the Vikings, while doubles play will begin at 3:00 p.m.
