Kentucky Invitational Day Two Results
LEXINGTON, Ky. - After winning her second singles match of the weekend,
Kara Sherwood has earned a spot in the D Flight championship match to lead the Cleveland State women's tennis team on day two of the Kentucky Invitational. CSU will also be represented in the Singles A and E Flight consolation finals Sunday on the final day of the UK Invite.
"The weather today was not the best we could have hoped for, but nobody used that as an excuse and we were able to come away with a couple good wins," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Maria, Nicole and Kara all had some great wins in singles action, while Nicole and Kara played very well in the doubles bracket. We were able to notch three singles wins today, which wasn't our goal, but still good considering the level of competition that is here. Tomorrow we have a chance to leave our mark on the tournament and hopefully come away with some more wins."
Sherwood, who is 2-0 on the weekend, earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Olga Kalodzitsa of Armstrong Atlantic to reach the championship match of the singles D flight Sunday morning.
Maria Lazaris and Nicole Janek also posted victories on the second day of the UK Invite for the Vikings, both reaching the consolation finals of their respective flights. Lazaris earned a 6-2, 6-7 (2), 12-10 win over Alix Young of Morehead State to advance in the singles A flight, while Janek earned a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win over Evansville's Kelsey Costales in the singles E flight.
Sherwood and Janek will begin play at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning, while Lazaris will be in action at 8:30 a.m. Catrine Bjerrehus, Alex Power and Mengdi Liu will also be competing in singles action for the Vikings Sunday.
