BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Cleveland State won one singles and one doubles crown and finished second in four other flights to conclude play in the 2010 Bowling Green Invitational on Sunday.
After a 10-3 showing on Saturday, the Vikings could manage just a 2-4 singles mark on Sunday and a 3-3 doubles record.
"Today was tough," CSU head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We had such a successful day yesterday that you would expect that we would come out and finish the tournament strongly. But you have to remember that we have only one junior and one senior on this roster and you have to temper your expectations accordingly.
"Today's play doesn't diminish however what we accomplished this weekend. We have a deep and talented roster that is going to continue to get better and better as they play more together. This is only the first week of the fall and we have a long way to go before the year is done."
Sophomore Mengdi Liu proved to be one of the highpoints of the day for the Vikings, claiming a straight sets win over Toledo's Rocio Benavent, 6-4, 6-2 to win the title of the No. 8 singles flight.
That was the lone singles crown for CSU however as Kara Sherwood (No. 3 singles), Nicole Janek (No. 4) and Alex Bush (No. 5) each dropped their respective flight championship matches in straight sets to finish second.
Sanda Bejan bounced back from a tough semi-final loss to defeat IUPUI's Danielle Haefele, 6-0 and 6-3 to finish third in the No. 6 singles flight.
The Vikings opened the day with some success in doubles play.
Playing in the No. 4 doubles flight, the Viking team of Bjelan and Bush swept a pair of matches to claim the flight championship. They edged the squad of Lonergan and Wilson from Cincinnati, 8-5, in the semi-final and came back to out-last, the mixed team duo of Jetli from Cincinnati and Sunstram from IPFW, 8-5.
"Sanda and Alex are really playing well together," Etzkin said. "They had a great weekend."
CSU reached the final in one other doubles flight when the duo of Janek and Power routed Cincinnati's Slynko and Woulfe, 8-2, in the semi-final but fell to Jessica Easdale and Emily Reuland of Bowling Green, 8-1, in the No. 3 doubles final.
The Vikings will use the week ahead to prepare before returning to the court next weekend, Sept. 24-26 when they play in the Michigan State Invitational.
