ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened its home slate on Saturday by splitting a pair of matches. The Vikings began the day with a 7-0 setback to Akron before rallying for a 7-0 sweep of Robert Morris later in the evening.
The split keeps CSU's overall record at .500 (5-5) this spring.
"Akron is a very good team and I thought we did a good job of battling with them," assistant coach Jay Tee said. "It was nice to see us bounce back this evening against Robert Morris and really take control of that match from the outset."
CSU dropped all three doubles matches and all six singles contests to Akron. Catrine Bjerrehus put up a valiant effort at No. 1 singles before falling to Zara Harutyunyan, 6-4, 6-4.
The story was much different against RMU as the Vikings did not lose a match against the Colonials.
After sweeping all three doubles matches, including an 8-0 win at No. 3 by Molly Drake and Maria Lazaris, the Vikings won all six singles matches.
Lazaris (No. 2), Sanda Bjelan (No. 4) and Charlotte Gibbons (No. 5) did not lose a game in sweeping their contests, 6-0, 6-0.
In all, CSU lost just four games in singles against RMU.
CSU is back in action next Friday (Feb. 26) when the Vikings continue their homestand with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Bowling Green.
