TOLEDO, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team won two points on the final day of the Rocket Invitational on Saturday at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts. The Vikings finished the two-day hidden dual with four points, claiming third place.
Toledo finished with nine points and was followed by Bowling Green with eight, CSU, Duquesne (3) and Detroit (0).
"This was a good event for us against some quality competition," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I think it gave us a chance to see where we are at as a team heading into the ITA Regionals in two weeks. Our youngsters are getting some really good experience on the court and we'll continue to work on some things moving forward."
The two-day event was staged with three matches in each pod with the team winning two of the three earning the point.
Day two started out with the Vikings playing one doubles contest, losing two of three to Bowling Green. The duo of Nicole Janek and Mengdi Liu picked up CSU's lone win, 9-8.
CSU also played three different singles contests today, winning both "B" singles events with three wins both times, but dropping two of the three matches in the "A" singles match.
In the "B" singles, Alex Bush and Mengdi Liu won both of their matches, helping CSU earn the point against Duquesne and Detroit. Bush won her matches 6-0, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-0, while Liu picked up 6-2, 6-3 and 5-7, 6-0 (10-1) wins.
Sanda Bjelan helped the Vikings sweep the three singles contests from Duquesne with a 6-3, 6-0 win, while Janek picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win against Detroit.
Kara Sherwood was the lone Viking to win a match in the "A" singles contest against Toledo, earning a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
The Vikings will now be out of action until Oct. 21-25 when CSU competes in the ITA Regionals in Ann Arbor, Mich.
