TOLEDO, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened play at the Rocket Invitational on Friday at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
The five team field each played five scored sessions with three matches in each session. CSU scored two points and is in third place behind Toledo (5) and Bowling Green (4). Duquesne is in fourth place with one point, while Detroit was scoreless after day one.
"We had some good tennis today and got a chance to see where we stand as a team," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I am encouraged by our play so far this fall and I feel that our youthful squad is getting some really good experience against some top notch competition."
CSU opened the day by splitting a pair of doubles sessions, winning two of the three matches against Detroit and dropping three contests to Duquesne. The team of Catrine Bjerrehus and Sanda Bjelan earned an 8-3 win, while Alex Bush and Maria Lazaris also won 8-3.
CSU picked up its other point of the day by winning two of three singles contests against Detroit in the "A" singles. Bjerrehus won 6-3, 6-3, while Kara Sherwood tallied a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
"We split our matches with Detroit last spring, but they got us in the league semifinals so it was big to go out and get a point against them today," Etzkin said.
CSU dropped all three "A" singles matches to Bowling Green, while Bush was the lone Viking to win in the "B" singles match against BGSU, winning 4-6, 6-4 (10-8).
The Vikings will conclude play in the Rocket Invitational on Saturday.
