SETTING THE SCENE: The Cleveland State's men's soccer team enters its busiest week of the season, facing three teams in seven days as the Vikings end a five-match homestand on Monday (Oct. 11) against Buffalo, and then travel to play conference opponent Detroit on Friday (Oct. 15) and IUPUI on Sunday (Oct. 17). CSU (6-6, 3-2 Horizon League) has gone undefeated in 19 of its last 20 home contests and has won five of its last seven matches.

REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The Vikings played two matches at Krenzler Field as part of a five-game home stand. Below are recaps of those contests:

Match 11: CSU 2, Pittsburgh 0 (Oct. 6, Cleveland, Ohio)
Junior Brian Donnelly scored the first goal of his CSU career, and the Vikings got another score off a Pittsburgh own goal, as Cleveland State defeated the Panthers, 2-0. Almir Suljevic replaced Brad Stuver in goal late in the contest, and the two combined to give the Vikings their second shutout of the season.

Match 12: CSU 1, Valparaiso 0 (Oct. 9, Cleveland, Ohio)
Aslinn Rodas broke a scoreless tie late in the second half, scoring off a breakaway pass from Aaron Adkins in the 86th minute, giving the Vikings a 1-0 victory over Valparaiso. Stuver earned his second shutout of the season, and the team's third overall, recording five saves in the win.

2010 SEASON PREVIEW: Head coach Ali Kazemaini believes the Vikings have the roster to compete for a Horizon League championship in 2010. Six starters return, highlighted by sophomore forwards Aaron Adkins (who has scored twice in 2010) and Admir Suljevic (3 goals, 6 assists, 12 points last season), both of whom were named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer team in 2009. Backing them up will be an established Viking defense that includes seniors Audric Kilroy and Jeff Baker and junior John Wargo. This trio led a Viking defense that recorded eight shutouts last year and guided Cleveland State to a second straight undefeated home record. Capping the defense is sophomore goalkeeper Brad Stuver, who became the starter late last season, and finished with 58 saves, good for fifth in the Horizon League. The midfield will be populated by some new faces. Wargo (3-1-7 in 2010) is projected to move to the middle. Joining him will be junior college transfer Manuel Conde (2-2-6 in 2010), who was named conference player of the year at Lakeland Community College, and freshman Cameron Eisses, who led his high school team in scoring four years in a row. Other notable newcomers include forward Caleb Eastham, who was named conference player of the year after scoring 18 goals with six assists his senior year; a pair of talented defenders, National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American Aldo Maiorano - a former teammate of Conde's at Lakeland - and Zach Ellis-Hayden, a high school all-region honoree; and midfielder Tommy Fitzgerald, who was the offensive MVP of a Hudson High squad that finished 2009 as the district runner-up.

HOME, SWEET HOME: Cleveland State has been nothing short of impressive at home the past three seasons, owning a 16-1-3 record in matches at Krenzler Field since the start of the 2008 season. Cleveland State has outscored opponents 36-15 in that stretch and has recorded 11 shutouts. The Vikings went 6-0-1 at home in 2008 and 5-0-2 in 2009. Their sole home loss in this span came earlier this season when CSU fell to Milwaukee, 1-0, in double overtime on Oct. 3.

SUPER STUVER: Sophomore goalkeeper Brad Stuver has been having a fantastic 2010 campaign. Stuver leads the Horizon League in saves with 54, having recorded nine more stops than Green Bay's Ryan Wehking, who is in second place with 45. Stuver's 4.60 save-per-game average has him ranked 48th in the country in the most recent NCAA statistics (released Oct. 3). Stuver also earned his second shutout of the season on Saturday when the Vikings blanked Valparaiso, 1-0. This followed another fantastic performance against Pittsburgh last Wednesday (Oct. 6), when Stuver played for 82:30 in the Vikings 2-0 win.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brad Stuver has been chosen as the Horizon League's Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the week beginning Oct. 4. Stuver helped lead the Vikings to shutouts against Pittsburgh and Valparaiso and recorded a combined eight saves on the week.

WELCOME BACK: Aaron Adkins scored twice in his first three matches back in the lineup, with both goals being game-winners. Adkins, who had missed four contests with a foot injury, came off the bench against UIC on Sept. 24 to score the Vikings' final goal in a 3-2 win, and had his second goal of the year in the 3-1 win over Green Bay on Friday (Oct .1). He also had an assist in Saturday's 1-0 win over Valparaiso.

GO GO WARGO: After playing his first two seasons as a defender, John Wargo was moved into an attacking midfield position for 2010, and it has resulted in Wargo becoming the team's leading scorer. He has scored a team-high three goals this season (the first three of his CSU career) and has added an assist to give him a team-leading seven points. One of those goals was the game-winner against Niagara on Sept. 5. Wargo has done a great job creating scoring opportunities, as he is second on the team with 15 shots and eight on goal.

NEXT UP: The Vikings close out their home conference slate with a match against Wright State at Krenzler Field on Saturday (Oct. 23) at 7:00 p.m.
