CLEVELAND, Ohio – Regular Season champion and top-overall seed Cleveland State (8-3-6) blanked fifth-seed Robert Morris (6-4-7) 2-0 in the Horizon League Semifinals on Wednesday evening.
The Vikings advance to their third championship game under head coach
Sinisa Ubiparipovic and will take on second-seeded Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The opening half went scoreless, with the Green and White holding a 4-3 edge in shots.
Cleveland State opened the scoring in the 68th minute when
Tom Mertz finished off a pair of passes from
Paolo Roditti and
Uzman Ramees.
Six minutes later, the freshman of the year, Ramees, doubled the margin after sprinting down the left sideline and slotting the ball home, sending the Vikings to the championship game.
The Green and White held a 9-5 advantage in shots, including a 3-1 shots-on-goal edge. The corner kicks favored the home team, 4-1.
Ognjen Bozovic led the game with three shots.
Peleg Armendariz and Mertz were next with two shots apiece.
Goalkeeper of the Year,
Ryan Poling, picked up his fifth shutout of the year after making one save.
