COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team dropped its spring season opener, 7-0, to Ohio State on Tuesday night at the Varsity Tennis Center.

The Vikings fell to 0-1 overall, while the Buckeyes improved to 2-0 following a win over Xavier earlier today.

"We competed much better than we have in the past against Ohio State and there are a lot of positives that we can take out of this match," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "This is the type of match that will make us a better team once we get to the Horizon League schedule."

CSU dropped the doubles point by losing all three matches, but two of the contests (No. 1 and No. 3) were tight 8-4 decisions. Both CSU squads trailed 6-4 before losing the next two points.

"I thought Catrine and Charlotte really battled at No. 1 singles and there were a few points here and there that could have turned the tide of that match," Etzkin said. "If they keep playing like that, they will have a very successful season."

In singles play, Nicole Janek had the closest contest, falling 6-1 in the first set before battling tough in a 7-5 setback.

The Vikings will be back in action for two matches this weekend, beginning with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Western Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 23) before heading to Michigan State for a 12:00 p.m. match on Sunday (Jan. 24).
