CLEVELAND, Ohio - Kailey Klein scored 29 points Shawnita Garland added 24 points to lead Cleveland State to a 93-53 victory over Case Western Reserve in CSU's exhibition opener on Friday night in the Wolstein Center.
Garland added 12 rebounds and three steals, while Klein chipped in six rebounds. Angel Roque scored 10 points and Janelle Adams added nine.
The Vikings led 38-38 at the half before outscoring the Spartans, 55-25, in the second half.
"I thought we came out and did a much better job of running our offense in the second half," head coach Kate Peterson Abiad said. "We made better cuts and were able to get some easy looks at the basket and in transition.
"I was happy with the way we took care of the ball in the second half and we did a great job on the boards."
CSU outrebounded the Spartans, 47-25.
Klein scored the first basket of the game and the Vikings would never trail, however, CWRU hung around as the Spartans trailed just 21-19 with 8:41 to play. However, a 12-0 run by CSU pushed the lead to 32-19 before the Vikings settled on a 10-point halftime lead.
CSU opened the second half by scoring the first 11 points to push the lead to 21 points and Case would get no closer than 17 the rest of the way.
The Vikings shot .469 (30-64) from the field, hitting 29-of-32 (.906) from the free throw line. They also handed out 22 assists on their 30 baskets, while making 12 steals.
Caitlin Henry and Ashleigh Tondo led the Spartans with 11 points each.
CSU will conclude its exhibition season on Tuesday (Nov. 10) when the Vikings host Wayne State at 7:00 p.m.
