CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State won five of six singles matches and won its first doubles point of the year in a 6-1 victory over Niagara Saturday afternoon at River Oaks Racquet Club. The Vikings are now 2-4 on the season.
Senior Sarah Galon and freshman Denisa Muntean, together for the first time, won at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, while freshman Charlotte Gibbons and Kristin Chamberlain won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point and give CSU an early lead.
"We worked really hard on doubles this week," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We made some lineup changes, looking at some different combinations."
Galon (12-6) and Muntean (6-6) each won at the top of the singles lineup, with Galon defeating Vanja Lakic 6-1, 6-2. Muntean led, 3-1, in the first set before Niagara's Jennifer Cremieux retired with a leg injury.
Chamberlain (7-5), who had missed the last few matches due to injury, returned to the lineup in style with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles over Jacquelyn Cary and junior Jenn Myers controlled play at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Molly Mathews.
Gibbons (8-6) won in the third spot 6-2, 6-2 over Jennifer Cremieux. Junior Christine Vogelgesang fell in the only match not decided in straight sets 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-4 to Shella Dargout.
"We talked all week about starting the season on a new track with a win and we took care of business," Etzkin said.
CSU returns to action Sunday, Feb. 4 against St. Bonaventure at 10:00 a.m. and Buffalo at 3:00 p.m.
