CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State won nine of the meet's 10 bouts, including five by pin or tech fall, to defeat Clarion, 44-3, on senior day at Woodling Gym on Sunday. The win moves the Vikings to 10-4 on the season and 3-2 in EWL meets. Clarion falls to 7-12 and 0-5.
Junior David Armstrong (133) and sophomores Victer Crenshaw (157) and Marcus Effner (165) each won by pin and junior Mike Hurley (141) added a win by injury default as CSU raced out to a 30-0 lead with wins in each of the first six bouts. Senior David Gilkey pinned his opponent at 184 pounds and sophomore Chris Hahn won by tech fall at 197.
"Today was a good way and obviously, I'm pleased with the results," head coach Jack Effner said. "Win or lose, we want to wrestler hard and we got good results with that today."
Junior Ryan Riggs (10-12) started the rout at with a 3-2 decision over Clarion's Pat Feeley at 125 pounds. Riggs, one of two Vikings to manage a win in Friday's loss to Edinboro, tied the match 1-1 with an escape at the start of the third period. Riggs sprawled on s Feeley shot and spun around for the winning takedown with 0:16 remaining. Feeley scored an escape at the buzzer.
Armstrong (13-10) extended the CSU lead to 9-0 with a 44-second pin of Sal Lascari. Armstrong put a headlock on Lascari early and put him on his back with an alligator roll and kept him there to win the fall.
In the 141-pound bout, Mike Hurley (19-8) scored an early takedown and two near-fall points to lead, 4-0, before Clarion's Greg Lewis suffered a serious neck injury. As Lewis fought out of Hurley's pinning hold, Lewis had his head pulled back at a sharp angle. After a long break, Lewis was carted off the mat. Hurley was awarded the injury default win in 33 seconds.
Junior Ryan Hurley (24-9) won the day's most exciting bout at 149 pounds, defeating Hadley Harrison, 5-4, on a reversal just before the final buzzer. Harrison took a 4-3 lead with 0:16 remaining with a single-leg takedown near the edge of the mat. A stalling call on Harrison sent the match to a restart, setting the stage for Hurley's match-clinching score that put the Vikings ahead, 18-0.
Crenshaw (25-7) and Effner (20-14) each won by pin at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, to put Cleveland State ahead by a 30-0 count. Crenshaw's fall over Lucas Christopher came in 1:46 while Effner put Mario Morelli on his back in 90 seconds.
After Clarion's Dominic Ross won 13-9 decision over sophomore Nate Kmetz at 174 pounds to put the Golden Eagles on the board, Gilkey (16-15) celebrated his senior day by pinning Scott Joseph in 3:37. The fall, Gilkey's 15th in his career, gave the Vikings a 36-3 lead.
Hahn (13-4), who has now won seven straight matches and is 9-2 this calendar year, won by tech fall in 4:31 over Dixon Jordan at 197 pounds to extend the lead to 41-3. Sophomore heavyweight Rashard Goff (23-13) finished the rout with a 9-8 decision over A.J. Brooks in a bout where Goff's riding time was the difference.
The Vikings conclude the regular season Sunday, Feb. 18 at West Virginia. CSU will host the Eastern Wrestling League championships at Woodling Gym March 3-4.
