FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Senior Sarah Galon went 2-0 in singles play to lead Cleveland State to a split in two matches at IPFW Friday. CSU lost to IPFW by a 4-3 score for the second time this season but rebounded for a 6-1 win over IUPUI. The Vikings are now 4-5 on the season.
Galon (15-6) won 6-4, 6-2 over IPFW's Sachi Janek in the day's first match and then won a three-set decision over Jessica Petersson of IUPUI 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
Chamberlain also split her two doubles matches, playing with freshman Charlotte Gibbons at No. 2 doubles. Gibbons and Chamberlain won, 8-5, against IUPUI after losing earlier in the day versus IPFW.
"I think it was a tale of two different teams," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I didn't think we played great doubles and we didn't have our best performance early but we regrouped after the IPFW match and I feel like we played like a team." "We were playing for each other and we had a lot of Viking pride."
Junior Jenn Myers had the busiest day on the team and also teamed with junior Christine Vogelgesang to go 2-0 in doubles. Myers' two doubles matches went into tie-breakers and then she split a pair three-set matches, defeating Tessa Williams of IUPUI 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 after losing to IPFW's Hanna Hager.
In all, Myers played six sets of singles and two doubles matches that went to tie-breaker.
Freshman Denisa Muntean had an eventful day, splitting her two singles matches at No. 2 singles. What made her day eventful was that she celebrated her 19th birthday by clinching the fourth point of CSU's win over IUPUI 7-6 (2), 6-4 over Jessie Ritchie. It was her first match-clinching win as a Viking.
The Vikings are off next week and will return to action on Friday, Feb. 23 at Youngstown State.
