OXFORD, Ohio - Day two of the Miami Invite proved even better than day one for the Vikings as multiple individual bests by Viking swimmers were highlighted by a national qualifying performance put forth by sophomore Jakub Dobies in the 100 yard breaststroke.
With his time of 54.03 in the event, Dobies qualifed for the NCAA Championships while settting pool and meet records to win the event. He also set a school record with a split of 20.70 for his leg of the 4x50 yard freestyle relay, only to have it broken in the same race by teammate Stephen Grove, who swam a 20.42 on the anchor leg.
"He'll be in the top ten in the nation with those times," said head coach Wally Morton. "Not only Jakub but I thought the team as a whole swam very well," He continued.
Dobies' performances were not the only bright spots on the day by any means. "On the men's side I would say about eighty percent of the performances were personal best times," stated Coach Morton.
Sophomore Todd Winchell's' time of 51.9 in the 100 backstroke was good enough for a second place finish and a personal best, and the men's 400 medley relay team of Zvonimir Androic, Dobies, Winchell, and Grove improved their time to 3:22.80 in finishing second in that event. Grove also added to the team's point total with a 10th place finish in the 50 free with a time of 21.11.
The Cleveland State men sit in 6th place overall with 483 points through 22 events, as they also received day two points from Nedim Nisic in the 100 butterfly (10th, 1:51.81), Stef Potgieter in the 100 breaststroke (10th, 58.02), and Dave Duecker in the 400 individual medley (10th, 4:01.84).
The Vikings continue with day three of the Miami Invite today in their last competition before winter break.
