OXFORD, Ind. - Junior David Armstrong and sophomore Victer Crenshaw each were perfect in their three bouts to lead the Vikings to a 2-1 record with wins over Appalachian State and Eastern Illinois at the Purdue Duals on Saturday at Benton Central High School in central Indiana. Sophomores Chris Hahn and Rashard Goff each added two wins to help the Vikings move 3-2 in dual meets on the season.

"Crenshaw and Armstrong were outstanding," head coach Jack Effner said. "We have some very competitive guys on our team that can compete at a high level."

CSU won its first dual contest, 25-18, over Appalachian State, a team that featured two nationally-ranked wrestlers. Trailing 18-10 with three bouts remaining, senior David Gilkey (184) pinned Dan Carrasco and Hahn (197) won by injury default to give the Vikings a 22-18 advantage heading into the heavyweight bout. Goff, who had dropped three straight matches heading into the day, finished off the Mountaineers with a 2-0 win over Dave Hazell for the final score.

After falling behind 6-0 early, Armstrong (133) and newly-added transfer Antonio Nicholson (141) won decisions to make it 6-6. Crenshaw (157) gave the Vikings a slim 10-9 lead with a 9-1 major decision over Eddie Hutchinson.  Tommy Hutchinson defeated sophomore Marcus Effner, 3-1, to get ASU back up by two before the Mountaineers would take their 18-10 lead.

CSU's second meet of the day wasn't as close, as the Vikings pounded Eastern Illinois, 32-12. Junior Ryan Riggs (125) started things off with a 5-2 win over A.J. Ciccarelli and Cleveland State took the first six matches of the dual to storm out to a 23-0 lead. Two straight EIU pins pulled the Panthers to within 23-12, but Hahn (5-3) answered with a fall of his own and Goff (18-9) won, 6-0 over Joe Trinka to give CSU the 20-point win.

Purdue, which went 3-0 on the day and is now 10-0 in duals for the season, used a pin at 141 and major decisions at 125, 184 and 197 to dismantle CSU, 30-6, in the final dual of the day. Armstrong (9-5) scored a thrilling 3-1 sudden victory win over Sean Schmaltz. A 7-1 win by Crenshaw (18-5)  pulled the Vikings to within 13-6 with four bouts left, but CSU would not win another match.

"Purdue was pretty tough, and it was our third match of the day," Effner said. "We were sharper earlier in the day."

Appalachian State went 1-2 on the day and Eastern Illinois went winless in three duals.

The Vikings are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 13 at Eastern Michigan. The meet is slated for a 12:00 p.m. start.
