AKRON, Ohio - The Vikings claimed wins at the top two singles spots and another in the second half of the lineup but it wasn't enough as CSU fell to Akron, 4-3, on Friday night. The loss drops Cleveland State to 0-3 on the season.
After the Vikings were swept in doubles play, senior Sarah Galon (10-5) and freshman Charlotte Gibbons (6-5) quickly dismantled their opponents to put CSU right back in the match. Galon won 6-3, 6-4 over Tanya Gombera at No. 1 singles and Gibbons did likewise in the fifth spot, 6-2, 6-2 over Lindsey Berry.
"Sarah and Denisa were off the court fast and we had plenty of chances to get the win," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "It was right in front of us. It was a tough loss."
Freshman Denisa Muntean (4-5) recovered after losing 2-6 in the first set, taking the next two stanzas 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles over Jenna Larson.
"I told Denisa that if we weren't going to have a chance, she would have to play like a senior," Etzkin said. "She came up with a big win and I'm proud of the way she and the team played in singles."
Juniors Lindsay Sellers (0-4) and Jenn Myers (0-2) each lost at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, with Myers falling in three sets to Kerry Langworthy 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Fellow junior Christine Vogelgesang fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to Alyssa Carlson to complete the singles split with the Zips.
The Vikings continue their grueling weekend stretch at the River Oaks Racquet Club on Saturday against St. Francis (PA) beginning at noon. They will then travel to Toledo on Sunday to complete the three matches in three days stretch.
