EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite a win by senior Sarah Galon at No. 1 singles, CSU lost in its first action of the new year, 6-1, at Michigan State on Friday (Jan. 19). The Vikings are now 0-2 on the season.
Galon (9-5), who qualified for the ITA Regional Tournament in October, captured the first set, 6-3, over Michigan State's Christine Bader before losing in the second stanza 6-4, setting up a 10-point tie-breaker. Galon would edge Bader in the tie-breaker, 11-9.
It is believed it is the first time a Cleveland State player has beaten a player from Michigan State.
"Sarah winning was very big," assistant tennis coach David Howell said. "She played well and it was a much deserved win.
"Overall, it was a tough match. Everyone played well and some of the scores don't indicate how well we competed."
The Spartans swept the rest of the contest, featuring one 6-0, 6-0 win at no. 3 singles and 6-1, 6-1 wins in the second and sixth spots. Freshman Charlotte Gibbons put up a valiant effort, winning six games in her match in losing, 6-1, 7-5 to Ana Milosavljevic.
Galon and Gibbons also had CSU's best showing in doubles play, losing at the top spot, 8-5. Junior Lindsay Sellers and Denisa Muntean teamed at No. 2 doubles, losing 6-1, as did the third doubles tandem, juniors Christine Vogelgesang and Jenn Myers.
The Vikings return to action next Friday (Jan. 26) at Akron at 7:00 p.m.
