Vikings Dispose Of Niagara, 7-0

Feb. 4, 2006

Niagara Falls, N.Y. - The CSU women's tennis team held little back in their match against Niagara on Saturday (Feb. 4) evening, routing the Purple Eagles, 7-0, on their home court.

"This is a huge win for our program," assistant coach David Howell said. "Niagara is a very tough team, and we played as well as we have played all year. Everybody stepped up and took care of business.

"If we can play like we did today once the conference schedule starts up, we are going to win a lot of matches."

CSU yielded only one defeat the entire night, dropping only the No. 3 doubles match.

The Vikings earned the doubles point thanks to an 8-6 win by Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott at No. 1 and an 8-4 victory by Kristin Chamberlain and Lindsay Sellers at No. 2.

Cleveland State rolled on from there, claiming the six singles points in just two sets each while limiting Niagara to no more than four games in all but one set.

Chamberlain and Christine Vogelgesang dominated their opponents at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, with Chamberlain losing only two games (6-2, 6-0) and Vogelgesang dropping just three (6-1, 6-2).

Myers coasted by Vanja Lakic at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, while Ungerott (6-1, 6-4) and Sellers (6-4, 6-1) earned strong wins as well.

Galon had possibly the closest match of the night, edging out Danielle Grenier by a 7-5 count in the first set before shutting her down in the second with a 6-2 win.

The Vikings will try to continue their winning ways on Sunday (Feb. 5) when they take on Buffalo beginning at 1:00 p.m.
