Vikings Drop 4-3 Decision to Southeast Missouri

Feb. 17, 2006

Fort Wayne, Ind.-The Cleveland State women's tennis team lost a close 4-3 decision to SEMO Friday afternoon despite strong performances at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

The No. 3 unit of Jenn Myers and Christine Vogelgesang downed Kimmy Anderson and Morgan Kemp 8-4 for the only doubles win of the day. The Redhawks defeated CSU at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, 8-3, 8-6, respectively.

The Vikings continued to struggle in singles losing three of its six matches. SEMO's Bryce Kristal downed No. 1 Sarah Galon 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3 in the closest match of the day.

"They had a couple of very good players at the top of lineup who pushed us around today," said coach Brian Etzkin. "We just couldn't manage to get a win in the top three positions."

Cleveland State faired better at the bottom of the lineup where No. 4 Lindsay Sellers, No. 5 Kristin Chamberlain and No. 6 Christine Vogelgesang all pulled out wins. Vogelgesang downed Kemp 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, improving to 7-5 for the year.

"We knew going into this weekend we would have some good opportunities at the bottom of the lineup and it worked out for us," said Etzkin. "Unfortunately we didn't manage to pick up the doubles point and that hurt us from the start."

Both the men and women are back in action this evening when they battle IPFW.
