CSU Drops to Michigan State, 7-0

Jan. 22, 2006

East Lansing, Mich. - A hard-hitting Michigan State was to much to handle for Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon as the women's tennis team lost by a score of 7-0.

At No. 1 singles Christine Bader defeated junior Sarah Galon in the closest match of the day 6-2, 6-3. This marked a turnaround for Galon, who won both her singles and doubles matches on Saturday afternoon against Dayton.

None of the Vikings were able to pull out a three-set match against the Spartans, who ranked 62nd in the nation in 2004-05.

"We could have competed better, however they were a very good team," said coach Brian Etzkin. "They came out very focused and didn't give up anything today. They got down for every low ball and took advantage of every short ball."

CSU did not fare better in doubles, dropping all three matches.

"Obviously we want to beat teams of this caliber but we also play them to get experience," said Etzkin. "The key is for us to learn from our weaknesses so we can compete better within our conference."

The Vikings will spend the upcoming week preparing to travel to St. Bonaventure on Jan. 27, and host Toledo and Robert Morris on Jan. 29.

"Our team goal for the weekend was to win one of two matches and that didn't happen," said Etzkin. "But we have a lot to look forward to next weekend. St. Bonaventure, Toledo and Robert Morris are all teams that we can compete against and do well."
