Cleveland State freshman heavyweight Rashard Goff put up one of his strongest tournament showings of the season, winning four straight before falling in a close title bout to finish second at the CSU Open on Sunday (Dec. 18). Freshman 174-pounder Chuck Koz notched three-straight wins before bowing out due to injury.
Goff scored a pair of pins in his first two bouts of the day at heavyweight, pinning unattached Steve Dumas in 3:20 before taking down Drew McCormick of Ohio in 1:42. A close 1-0 decision over unattached Alan O'Donnell sent Goff to the semi-finals where he worked another 1-0 decision over Jeremy Mosley of Edinboro. In the championship bout, David Hazell of Appalachian scored a late reversal to upend Goff for a 3-1 decision.
Koz reeled off three straight wins to advance to the semi-finals of the 174-pound championship bracket, pinning Brandon Tepper of Cal-Poly in 3:00 before following with a pair of decisions. Mike Ward of Penn State scored a late take-down in the third period of the semi-final bout to hand Koz a 4-3 defeat to send him to the consolation bracket where he forfeited due to injury against Jared Ricotta of Duquesne.
The Vikings will break for the holidays before returning to action at the Midlands Invitational in Evanston, Ill. on Dec. 29-30.
