East Lansing, Mich. - Cleveland State held their own against a tough opponent in No. 17 Michigan State on Saturday (Dec. 10) night with a trio of strong decisions, but the Spartans proved to be too much in the final standings, claiming a 33-9 victory.

Senior Ron Howard got CSU on the board first with a 6-1 victory over Joe Williams at 184 pounds, avenging an 11-3 major decision loss to the Spartan last season at Woodling Gym.

Sophomore David Armstrong added a win at 133 pounds, scoring late takedowns in the third period to come away with a 6-1 victory over Ryan Frose. Freshman Victer Crenshaw opened up the 157-pound bout fast and furious, taking down Tony Greathouse early in the first period and cruising to an 8-5 decision.

"A loss is a loss. I never feel good about that," head coach Jack Effner said. "However, we represented Cleveland State well. It's tough to beat a top 20 team when you don't have all of your pistons firing.

"We're trying to weather the storm right now. We have had a lot of uncontrollable stuff happening right now. We have some time to get everything all pieced together."

Three of the Vikings' four 2005 NCAA qualifiers were unable to contribute against the Spartans, with Joe Dennis (197) and Marcus Effner (157) out of the lineup and Ryan Hurley (149) falling via an injury default.

The loss sends Cleveland State to 1-1 in dual meet competition this season.

The Vikings return to Cleveland to host the CSU Open on Dec. 18 at Woodling Gym beginning at 9:00 a.m.
