ASHLAND, Ohio - Cleveland State senior Ron Howard led a quintet of place-winners at the Ashland University Open on Saturday (Nov. 19) night, finishing first at 184 pounds.

Howard notched four straight wins to claim the title, including a pin of Brian Almer of Indianapolis to advance to the championship bout. There, he outlasted Jacob Tazzi of Gannon to claim a 9-8 decision for the title.

Freshman Jayrl Hunt advanced to the championship bout of the 125 bracket before falling to Mike Compton of Ashland to place second. Hunt opened the night with a 35-second pin of PJ Puriefey of King's College before taking decisions in the next two bouts.

Sophomore Ryan Hurley and freshman Rashard Goff placed fourth at 149 and 285, respectively, while freshmen Victer Crenshaw (157) and Nate Kmetz (165) finished sixth.

"This was a good experience for our wrestlers," head coach Jack Effner said. "Now, we have to lick our wounds and get ready for John Carroll on Tuesday."

Cleveland State hosts John Carroll at Woodling Gym beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 22).
