Brockport, N.Y. - Sophomore Joe Dennis got off to a hot start in his second season with the Vikings, tearing through the 197-pound championship bracket at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic to finished second overall.

Dennis reeled off three straight wins at the tournament, opening up with a pin of Karim Mahmoud of Rutgers in 6:43 before notching two more decisions to advance to the championship bout. His bid for the title would end there, however, as Kyl eCerminara of Buffalo would out-duel the Viking in a 6-0 match.

Several other Vikings made advanced deep into the tournament. Freshman Jayrl Hunt tallied three wins at 125, including a pin of Ryan Jablonski of Rutgers in 1:58. Sophomore Joe Wornoff notched three wins himself at 125, scoring a 9-0 major decision of Glen DiStefano of Brockport.

At 133 pounds, sophomore David Armstrong recorded three decisions before bowing out, while freshman Chuck Koz shelled off three straight wins at 174, including a pin of Jon Mathias of Army in 1:27.

Senior Ron Howard notched a pair of major decisions at 184, taking down Chris Swam of Bloomsburg 11-3 before topping Brian Ceaser of Army 14-5. Sophomore Mike Hurley scored two majors of his own at 141, beating Clint Smith of Buffalo 12-5 and Vince Cina of Penn 9-0, while junior Josh Ging registered two decisions at 165.

"This was a good starter for us," head coach Jack Effner said. "It allowed us to find out some of our strengths and weaknesses at an early point of the season. We have a lot of both at this point, but this is why we do this in November.

"We want to win all of the time, but this competition will really help us down the road. Everybody fought hard and tough tonight."

As a team, the Vikings tallied 79.5 points to finish eighth in an 11-team field and ahead of Eastern Wrestling League rival Bloomsburg (71.5).

Next up for the Vikings is the Ashland Open on Nov. 19. Action begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs throughout the day.
