Women's Tennis Clinches A 5-2 Victory Over IPFW

Oct. 9, 2005

Cleveland, Ohio - With a little help from the bottom of the lineup, the women's tennis team closed out their home fall schedule with a 5-2 win over IPFW Saturday afternoon at the Malaga Tennis Center, while the men fell 5-2.

Despite blistery conditions the duo of Morgon Ungerott and Sarah Galon easily captured an 8-2 victory in No. 1 doubles. Lindsay Sellers and Kristin Chamberlain dropped the No.2 match to Sachi Janek and Beth Miller 8-5, but Jenn Myers and Abby Showalter were able to turn things around with a hard-fought 8-4 victory.

"The afternoon match was definitely a success," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "IPFW played a lot tougher than we expected and there were a few minutes when it was in doubt."

Singles play proved equally as challenging for the Vikings who won four of six matches. At No. 4 singles, Morgan Ungerott pulled out a critical 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 win over Beth Miller. Kristin Chamberlain also found success at No. 6 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Jessica Vervynckt.

"Luckily the bottom of our lineup came through at 4, 5 and 6," said Etzkin. Ungerott, Sellers and Chamberlain all had very tough matches. I'm glad we came away with the win."

On the men's side, senior Jay Tee and freshman Rob West once again led the Vikings in doubles play with an 8-2 win over Landry Nzudie and Nabid Mourad Filho. The Vikings fell short in No.2 and No.3 doubles, however, and could not secure the team point.

"We really shot ourselves in the foot by not getting the doubles point," said Etzkin. "That set us back from the beginning and in singles we couldn't quite put it together"

The Vikings went on to drop 4 of their 6 singles matches, despite strong performances by Tee and Steven Wipprecht. They went 7-6 (6), 6-0 and 6-3, 2-6, 14-12 respectively.

"Usually the matches are tougher at the top, but today they were tougher down low in the lineup," said Etzkin. "We just couldn't quite do it."

After a few days rest the Vikings will return to action on Oct. 14 at the Can-Am Tournament in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
