Cleveland State (5-2) fought off a late IUPUI (2-7) rally en route to defeating the Jaguars, 78-72, in women's basketball action this afternoon in Goodman Arena. The Vikings led 69-53 with 4:18 remaining, but a 19-7 spurt by IUPUI cut the lead to five with 25 seconds left. However, CSU broke the Jaguars' press for a lay-up to seal its fourth consecutive win.
The Vikings led 35-32 after a first half that saw five ties and nine lead changes. CSU came out of the locker room and went on a 15-5 run in the first six minutes to push the lead to 13. For the game, the Vikings shot 41 percent, while holding IUPUI to a 29 percent performance from the floor as the Jaguars dropped their third straight. In addition, CSU held a 50-45 margin on the boards in a sloppy game that featured 55 fouls and 44 turnovers.
Junior forward Kim Brockway (Marine City, Mich./Marine City) led all players with 21 points as she went 7-of-10 from the floor. Junior forward Tonya Crum (Lodi, Wis./Sun Prairie) added 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while senior forward Mahogany Green (Toledo, Ohio/Bowsher) finished with 11 points and six rebounds despite being limited to 14 minutes due to foul trouble. Guards Erika Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and Venus Harmeyer (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) also finished in double figures, with 12 and 10 points respectively. Senior guard Bridget Oberer (Chillicothe, Ohio/Teays Valley) finished with a game-high eight assists and just two turnovers.
IUPUI was paced by sophomore forward Tiffany Kyser, who tallied 19 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Angie Watt and junior guard Kelli Ely added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Junior guard Amber Holle, who entered the game averaging a team-best 19.4 ppg, was held to a season-low nine.
"There are days when you're going to play like this," said CSU head coach Duffy Burns. "If we had played like this last year we would have lost. That says a lot about how much deeper and talented we are. With Mo [Mahogany Green] in early foul trouble, I was extremely happy with how Kim [Brockway] played."
After a week off for final exams, Cleveland State travels to Youngstown State on Saturday, Dec. 16 for a 5:15 p.m. tip.
