COLUMBUS, Ohio – Cleveland State (0-2) dropped the battle of Ohio to No. 10 Ohio State (2-0) 17-7 on Saturday afternoon.
The Buckeyes netted the first goal thirty seconds into the game, but a
Brennen Hickey goal came less than a minute later, tying the game up. Cleveland State took its first lead of the year on
Landon Whalen's first collegiate goal off a feed from
Adam Van Voorhis with 10:39 remaining in the first quarter.
Ohio State retied the game at the 6:03 mark before
Layton Speer put the Green and White back on top 3-2 with 4:46 showing. Two minutes later, Hickey bagged his second goal of the game off a Whalen pass to lead 4-2.
The Buckeyes rattled off the opening three goals of the second quarter to reclaim a 5-4 lead with 8:36 to go in the half.
Will Adair scored his second unassisted goal of the year to even the score at five-apiece with 5:52 left in the quarter. However, OSU regained the lead 40 seconds later and kept the 6-5 advantage at halftime.
Ohio State accounted for the first two goals of the third quarter, stretching the margin to 8-5 at the 10:05 mark. After Hickey completed the hat-trick, OSU netted the next four goals to lead 12-6 heading into the fourth.
The first five goals of the final quarter went to the home team as the Buckeyes extended their lead to 17-6 at the 6:23 mark. The final goal of the game went to Van Voorhis on the man-up off a Hickey assist as the Vikings fell on the road 17-7.
Hickey finished with four points with three goals and an assist. Long and Whalen each had two points in the game.
Seth Alejandrino and
Robbie Stewart each scooped up a pair of ground balls. Stewart also went 6-of-22 in the faceoff circle.
Justin Dalum made 13 saves in goal.
Cleveland State completes its three-game road swing to open the year at Bellarmine on Saturday, Feb. 14 at noon.
