LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Vikings (0-3) dropped their third straight road game to open the year with a 10-7 setback at Bellarmine (2-2) on Saturday afternoon.
Bellarmine scored the first three goals before
Adam Van Voorhis tallied the next two as the Vikings trailed 3-2 heading into the second quarter.
Creed McDonald sandwiched a home team goal in the second quarter as the game was tied 4-4 at halftime.
McDonald completed the hat-trick just two minutes into the second half as the Green and White claimed its first lead of the day, 5-4. Two minutes later,
Alex Long netted a goal off a
Jack Dickson assist to lead by two.
Bellarmine got a goal back with 8:15 showing, but a man-up strike by
Brennen Hickey off a Van Voorhis assist kept the margin at 7-5 with 3:09 left in the quarter. The Knights struck one last time with a minute left to trail 7-6 entering the fourth.
Bellarmine accounted for all four goals in the final quarter to come away with the 10-7 victory over the Vikings.
Cleveland State held a 44-28 edge in shots and a 26-16 advantage in shots on goal. The Vikings forced 23 turnovers and scooped up 21 ground balls.
Van Voorhis tied for a game-best five points on two goals and three assists.
Robbie Stewart went 15-of-21 in the faceoff circle with a game-best eight ground balls.
Griffin Valli and
Payton Corpus each caused two turnovers.
Justin Dalum made nine saves on the day.
The Vikings will take to Krenzler Field for the first-time this season on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. against Marquette. All games this season will be played outside, so please keep an eye on the weather and dress accordingly.
