CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State (0-4) dropped the home opener to Marquette (1-2) 9-7 on a cold day on Krenzler Field. This is the third straight game that the Green and White tallied seven goals.
Marquette opened the scoring before
Brennen Hickey netted back-to-back goals to lead 2-1 heading into the second quarter.
Adam Van Voorhis scored the only goal in the second quarter with four seconds left to lead 3-1 at halftime.
Unassisted goals by
Layton Speer and Van Voorhis pushed the margin to 5-1 with 10:17 to go in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles struck for the next three goals, trailing 5-4 heading into the fourth.
Marquette netted four unanswered goals to extend its advantage to 8-5 at the 6:50 mark. A Van Voorhis man-up goal off a Hickey pass broke up the run to trail 8-6 with 4:41 showing.
Will Adair followed with an unassisted goal with 1:48 to make it a one-goal deficit. However, Marquette scored one more time to win, 9-7.
Van Voorhis finished with a hat trick, and Hickey had three points on two goals and one assist.
The Vikings picked up 36 ground balls, with four players finishing with four apiece.
Robbie Stewart won eight faceoffs.
Seth Alejandrino forced three turnovers, and
Justin Dalum made 18 saves in goal.
Cleveland State heads back out on the road to take on Canisius on Saturday, Feb. 28, at noon.
